Medicare Enrollment Requirements

The Social Security Administration determines Medicare eligibility through three different qualification routes:

  1. Attaining the age of 65
  2. Possessing a documented disability
  3. Being diagnosed with permanent kidney failure or ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease)

Individuals who qualify for Medicare based on age can start the application process three months before turning 65. If you're under 65 and on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), there's usually a two-year waiting period for Medicare eligibility. However, those with SSDI due to permanent kidney failure or ALS can get Medicare right away, with no waiting time.

Obtaining Medicare coverage offers several pathways, such as retiring and selecting Medicare as your primary health insurance or staying in the workforce with Medicare as your secondary insurer.
